Sausageit is launched

Posted by mintfresh on Mar 24, 2010 in Random, Tech

In response to the latest b3ta newsletter, I’ve created a little project I like to call ‘sausageit‘.

Its a simple site that will take the name of a film, song, band etc and replace a word with Sausage. Often creating amusing results! It also posts them all to twitter, which probably has no use at all!

Give sausageit a go here

*Edit*

Sausageit was featured in the b3ta newsletter, which has generated a few more visitors than I usually get! So far over a 1000 Tweets.

I’m working on improving things, so far I’ve made quite a few background changes, theres a few added features as well:-

  • Tweets now only occur when a unique ’sausageit’ is generated.
  • Random ’sausageit’ appears on each page which can be voted for.
  • Added a Twitpic account, hope to add any visual ’sausageit’s
  • Top (Sausage) Dog displays the Tweets I’ve marked as favourites.

And maybe a few other bits I forgot about..

Please leave comments for any improvments or features you’d like to see.

Top Android Apps I Can’t Live Without

Posted by mintfresh on Mar 18, 2010 in Android, Geocaching, Tech

I have to say, my I’m loving my T-Mobile Pulse (otherwise known as the Huawei u8220).

I’ve found the Android OS to be more than capable, and the variety of 3rd party apps covers everything I need.

Below are my top apps for your Android phone. I assume these will run on most Android phones, so in no particular order:-

Daily Strip
Whilst you could use the built in browser, or a 3rd party RSS app to view your favourite comic strips each day. I find this dedicated app an excellent way to enjoy my daily fix of Dilbert, xkcd and Cyanide and Happiness.

With support for many other comic strips, the ability to browse through previous strips, and even bookmark your favourites, I think this covers all your comic strip needs.

ES File Explorer
This is a great utility for managing the files on your phone, It supports all the standard file explorer functionality, but the best feature is its ability to browse shares on your LAN. I find this invaluable for transferring files to my phone, without the need to connect the phone to my computer.

GDocs
Getting an Android phone  means you start checking out the ‘cloud’ based Google apps. As a result I’ve discovered Google Docs can be quite handy for making notes on anything you require. This 3rd Party app lets you edit and view these docs on your phone, and it all syncs with your online docs.

gTasks
In the same vain as GDocs, this lets you sync your Google tasks with your phone. Very useful for keeping track of all your important To-Dos!

GeoBeagle
Until the offical Geo Caching app is released, this is your best bet for Geo Caching on Android. A niche app this may be, but its proved to be a great use on my new Geo Caching hobby. Its also a great way to make the most of your phones GPS capability, and I urge anyone with a capable phone to give it ago.

PureRSS
So far this seems to be the best option for a simple RSS feeder on Android. It does nothing fancy, but is a very capable RSS feeder. A feed search would make things even better!

Twidroid
So far the best Twitter client I have used on Android, or any phone for that matter. Does everything I need from a Twitter client, including auto updating and notifying you in the background, which is a very handy feature.

Theres many more great apps out there on Android, but these are ones I use everyday and really help make my phone a useful device.

Please let me know about the apps you can’t live without in the comments.

Guybrush Threepwood starts a new adventure!

Posted by mintfresh on Mar 17, 2010 in Geocaching

No, not actually Monkey Island news, but more Geocaching fun.

Guybrush Travel Bug being dropped off

Guybrush Travel Bug being dropped off

As part of my new found love of Geocaching, I have released my very first Travel Bug, named Guybrush Threepwood.

A Travel Bug is a unique item that you release at a cache, which other cachers can then pickup and take with them. You can then follow the travels of your TB using the Geocaching website. Your Travel Bug can have a mission, Guybrush’s mission is to reach Monkey Island (wherever that may be!), and cachers should move your travel bug onto other caches to aid its mission.

I’m happy to report my TB has already been picked up by another cacher, so hopefully will have more news soon!

Progress can be seen at Geocaching website , and I’ll keep the blog updated with anything exciting!

Geocaching

Posted by mintfresh on Mar 17, 2010 in Android, Geocaching, Tech, iPod

I have just recenlty discovered the wonderful world of ‘Geocaching’. Its been going for 10 years now, but with us all walking around with personal GPS devices thanks to our smartphones, its sure to get gain more fans.

If your not familar with Geocaching, its a rather simple idea. People all over the world hide ‘caches’, usually small containers, with at least a log book, and often some items of interest. As a geocacher, you hunt down these caches using the GPS coordinates, and then log your find.

Its a great excuse to go out for a walk in your local area, or to explore somewhere new, and easy to do if you have any sort of GPS device.

If your running Android, I recommend ‘GeoBeagle’ as a good starting point. Theres an offical app coming soon for Android, and one allready for iPhone users.

So why not give it ago, you never know what you might find in your local area!

Join in the fun by creating a free account at http://www.geocaching.com/. You’ll find me there as ‘mintfresh’

My Monkey Island Special Edition Review

Posted by mintfresh on Jul 15, 2009 in Games

So, SOMI:SE (the most convoluted game title ever?) is out. Since every man and his (spiffy) dog is now a Monkey Island fan and showering praise on it. I thought I’d join in, heres my thoughts.

Best. Game. Ever.

The only things Lucasarts need to fix are:-

1) They missed out some animation on things like candle flames (in the church) and fires(in Meathooks).

2) The music from certain areas seems to play when it shouldn’t.

10/10, 100%, 5 Golden Monkeys!

Posted by mintfresh on Jul 9, 2009 in Games

As part of One Life Left’s 100 episode celebrations, they are asking for submissions of your top 20 games. Derek, of ‘free market economy’ fame is going to compile a top 100 list from them. I figure I may as well post mine here, since I havn’t updated in a while. So here it is, I’ve probably missed some really great games that I love out, but thats how these things work!

Videogame Nation

Posted by mintfresh on Jun 22, 2009 in Games

Following on from my earlier spot at Videogame Nation, I thought a rundown of the event would be in order.

Videogame Nation is an exhibition in the very arty looking Urbis in Manchester. Its basically a celebration and recognition of Videogames (although I think computer games is a better term) from a British perspective.

Because this is British based, alot of the event focuses on British development studios, hardware and games. Expect to see some of your best loved games featured if you grew up in the UK. Dizzy, Sensible Soccer, Lemmings, Elite and Manic Miner amongst others feature. If you’re looking for Monkey Island, then you won’t find it, apart from in the aforementioned post. But you will find a massive wall of ‘Beneath a Steel Sky’ screenshots, and concept art from ‘Broken Sword’

Whole wall dedicated to screenshots from Beneath a Steel Sky.

MI5 box art?

Posted by mintfresh on Jun 21, 2009 in Games

Wen’t to see the Videogame Nation event in Manchester. Part of the exhibition asks you to re-draw box art for your favourite game.

This was on the top of one of the sheets on the wall as I went past. Note, I didn’t draw this myself! I wonder if they’ve heard the news about the new games in production?

A plea from a UK Monkey Island 5 fan.

Hope to have some more pics of the actual exhibition up in a later post.

Keeping things tidy (and charged)

Posted by mintfresh on Jun 20, 2009 in Games, Rant
The tidyest computer ever?

The tidyest computer ever?

So I decided to buy a game for the Wii. Its been a month or maybe more since I’ve bothered playing it.

I get the controllers found out from their hiding place, and straight away realised they arn’t charged (I’ve got some recharged battery packs for them).

After finding the charging cables, I get them plugged into the 360’s USB ports for charging (easier to access than the Wii’s). After all this messing around to get a simple game played, I start getting a bit angry and feel a rant coming on.

1) Why the hell didn’t the Wii come with rechargable pads as standard.

2) Why dosn’t it have a nice tidy slot where I store the remotes when I’m not using them.

To boldly go…

Posted by mintfresh on Jun 14, 2009 in Films
I have, and always will be, your friend

I have, and always will be, your friend

Saw the new ‘Star Trek’ film last night. Very enjoyable film, all the cast were great in their roles, there was more humour than the other films (not that they didn’t have their moments) and generally as someone who isn’t a big Star Trek fan, it seemed like a great addition to the Star Trek history.

Before the new Star Trek film came out, I had never been a Star Trek fan. I’d never watched a whole episode or seen any of the films at all. After hearing so many good things about the new film though, I started to get interested. Then Sky put all the old films on one week, and a plan was formed. I would watch all the old Star Trek films before seeing the new one. I managed to watch all but the last one before seeing the new film. (I decided that the Next Generation films weren’t that important to see before the new one).
